What is the Philips Magnavox WebTV Classic?


The Philips Magnavox WebTV Classic is a television set-top box that brings Internet access to the TV through the Microsoft WebTV Network Service. The WebTV Classic is a high performance solution that provides easy-to-use; reliable and affordable Internet access wherever there is a TV and a standard phone line.

What is the Philips Magnavox WebTV Plus?

WebTV Plus gives you lots of sources of entertainment and information through the Internet. WebTV Plus offers better, faster ways to control your TV, and unique features that allow you to personalize and enhance your TV viewing. The WebTV Plus is the next generation in a line of advanced digital technology products, which allow access to the Internet through any TV and standard phone line, plus the ability to view television programs while simultaneously connected to the web.

How does it work?

The WebTV Classic or WebTV Plus easily connects to your TV. They connect to Microsoft WebTV Network and provide access to the Internet through a standard telephone line.

What if I receive a phone call while the WebTV Classic or WebTV Plus is connected to WebTV Network Service?

If you have Call-Waiting and receive a phone call while you are on-line, the WebTV unit can pause service, so you can answer your phone call. After you complete your call, WebTV reconnects to the service and returns you to the Internet site you were previously viewing.

Do I need to install a special phone line?

No. WebTV is designed to connect to your current phone line.

What is the difference between WebTV Plus and WebTV Classic?

In addition to all of the Classic features like e-mail, web surfing and chat, the WebTV Plus has a Web Eye (tm), and TV integration features.

What is the monthly service fee for the Philips Magnavox WebTV Classic and Plus units?

A subscription to WebTV Networks costs $21.95 per month for the Classic unit and $24.95 per month for the WebTV Plus.

Why do I want WebTV instead of a computer?

WebTV is lower cost and easier to use than a computer!

What is the slot for on the front of the WebTV unit?

The slot is for a Smart Card. Future SmartCard technology will allow you to buy goods or services on-line, or gain special access to a web site.

What if I don't have cable TV?


WebTV will work with the standard over-the-air broadcast channels you receive in your home.

What is the modem speed of the WebTV Plus?


The WebTV Plus comes with a 56K modem. Because of limitations with other parts of the Internet, you are not guaranteed of this maximum speed at all times.

Can I print from my WebTV Classic and Plus?

What chat services are offered?


WebTV Network offers IRC based HTML chat. WebTV also highlights Live World's Talk City, which has numerous Chat rooms on a variety of topics, so customers can chat anytime with anyone in the world.

Can my WebTV unit get a computer virus?


No. Only WebTV Networks can access your system, so no outside influences will affect the performance of your WebTV Plus receiver or infect it. The WebTV Classic and Plus units do not have built-in hard drives, therefore, it cannot be infected with a virus. In addition, all web content travels via the WebTV Network Service and is regularly pre-filtered for viruses.

Is WebTV appropriate for children?


Yes. WebTV Plus offers a Kid Friendly (tm) feature to help guide young children to fun, pre-selected sites. WebTV also comes with SurfWatch (tm) -- a built in safeguard to help keep children from gaining access to inappropriate content on the Internet and receiving e-mail from strangers.

Do I need to know how to use the Internet to operate WebTV Classic or Plus?


No. That's the benefit of WebTV

If I currently have an Internet Service Provider (ISP), can I still subscribe to WebTV Networks?

Yes. There is Open ISP, which means if you use another ISP, you can buy the Philips Magnavox WebTV Plus unit and subscribe to WebTV Networks as well at a reduced cost of $14.95 a month.
